Everyone wants an HDTV. They are just really really cool. You walk past them in the store and the image almost jumps out at you. DStv still have a while to go before they can broadcast in HD (a salesman told me “early 2007″ but I am not holding my breath). Sky in the UK broadcast in HD already. Nevertheless people are buying them – I mean how could they possibly improve on that picture quality?

For a while now, Blu-ray (backed by Sony) and HD-DVD (backed by Toshiba and Microsoft), two rivals when it comes to a high-storage replacement for the DVD, have caused consumers to be weary of purchasing a device to play either format as the one device does not support the other format. This has caused a stunt in the popularity of the new technology.
